The Million Dollar education fund webpage
A smart lad by the name of Alex Tew has made himself just over a million dollars online by selling advertising space on his homepage. Alex who is from Wiltshire in England did this to pay for his university education, clever aye?
The page has earned an alleged $1,037,100 USD and back in 2005 it had a very good google page rank. The alexa rating peaked in the same year at 127.
The front page of Alex's site was a 1000 x 1000 pixel grid which is a total of a million pixels. Alex sold each pixel for a dollar. Advertisers who bought a pixel or a bunch of pixels were able to place an image, link to a URL and got a hover over popup slogan of their choice.
On new years day in 2006, the last blank 1,000 pixels were put up for auction on eBay. The auction finished on January 11 with a winning bid of $38,100.00. This brought the final total that Alex earned from his brilliant idea to a cool $1,037,100 USD.
